Professor makes mathematical instructions simple with Poker
September 18, 2005
Ronald Gould Goodrich C White, Professor of Mathematics at Emory University provides a new approach to mathematics instruction by combining poker play with math instruction. At first dry mathematics is given out and then students are offered time to use this knowledge in understanding poker.
Other card games are also used and students are asked somewhere along the game on probabilities of any given hand. The new approach which is rare in other universities has opened up a demand for the course. Only fifteen students can join the seminar and last year there were 158 applications of which most had to be turned away. There are 16 students in the present class as Gould tries to add at least one student more to the class.
