September 19, 2005
Manukau's City Councilor Su'a William Sio criticized National's 'Enjoy' gambling policy saying it shows no concern for the social and economic impacts of gambling. Su disregarded the gambling policy as dangerous and irresponsible.
Children, parents and families suffer due to extreme gambling. Children are neglected and the social impacts are higher in low socio economic areas. Su said, the policy is detrimental to children and is mainly concerned with the gambling industry profits. A recent study showed, Manukau city people lost more than $91 million each year gambling on lotteries. The social impact is a hidden problem which only takes limelight due to debt, crime or relationships break-up.
