Casinos suffer significant damage

The devastating Katrina hurricane forced casino operators to close down their high revenue earning gambling centers for a long time. Most of Mississippi's floating casinos were ruined. The Mississippi Gaming Commission had shut down all 12 casinos which were operating in the Gulf regions before Katrina took effect.
Harrah's Entertainment's riverboat Grand casino suffered a complete loss. The Grand casino of Harrah in Gulfport also couldn't survive Katrina. Beau Rivage of MGM Mirage was partially destroyed. Video footages showed a number of irreparable riverboat casinos parked on roads and highways. The state prohibits developing land based casinos. Thirty casinos in the state used to bring home $2.8billion in revenue and it contributed to the states and local government's tax revenues. The region is the nation's third largest casino market after Las Vegas and Atlantic City.
